A very good article, George. Lich is, as you stated, very adept at manoeuvring through a legal system she particularly abhors because it’s a Canadian legal system. Democracies must tolerate these unhappy citizens obsessed with prevarication.

I certainly pray the applicable court refuses this absurd trip to the White House. As for being a “peaceful grandmother”, that definition stretches all incredulity.

Let me guess, she could be an Alberta separatist as well…

Shameless.. trying to destroy our country they are the traitors

George, hypocrisy isn't a bug in populist politics—it's become close to a job requirement, and Tamara Lich is close to a perfect specimen of it. A woman who built an entire public identity on the claim that Canadian institutions are corrupt, illegitimate, and not worth her respect turns out to know precisely which probation officer to brief, which lawyer to hire, and which loophole labelled "work" gets her out from under house arrest and onto a lawn in Rockcliffe Park. The contempt is the brand. The competence is real. You can't build a fundraising empire on "the system is rigged" while simultaneously working that system more skillfully than most law-abiding Canadians ever will—except, apparently, you can, and donors will pay for both halves of the performance without noticing the contradiction.

And the photo with Ambassador Hoekstra isn't an awkward footnote. It's the whole story in one frame. A man whose devotion to Trump has no visible floor, standing arm-in-arm with a convicted organizer of an insurrection-adjacent occupation, at a party celebrating the country whose president keeps threatening to annex the one she just tried to bring to its knees. That's not two unrelated people who happened to be photographed together. That's the international wing of the same movement, shaking hands for the cameras.

If I were sentencing her, I'd skip the house arrest entirely and hand down something more fitting: a life sentence in the country she was so eager to impress on the Fourth of July. Let her build her brand yelling about government overreach in a place with no universal healthcare, no gun laws to speak of, and a president who smears or dismisses anyone who doesn’t support his ego. Let's see how long the complaining lasts once the King decides he’s sick of her whining.

Eric - "the international wing of the same movement, shaking hands for the cameras" is the line that nails it. That photo does more work than any op-ed could.

The house arrest to Rockcliffe Park pipeline is worth sitting with too. It's not incompetence butting up against ideology, it's the ideology functioning exactly as designed: contempt for the system as content, mastery of the system as practice. Different audiences for each half, and neither audience seems to mind the other exists.

Your closing point is the sharper needle though. She's built a career on portraying Canada as an authoritarian hellscape - she may want to be careful what she wishes for if she thinks Washington will treat her better once she's no longer useful.

I'll never forget during the initial hearing in Ottawa after her arrest, how her husband flew in on someone's private jet, then stood before the media and insisted that through the convoy she was "just exercising her First Amendment rights". And that tells me everything I need to know about them.

Kennet Benoit-Hutchins's avatar

Hmmm, I can’t find “First Amendment Rights” in Canadian law or constitutional documentation……….

Right-wing anger politics has been given wings by a disturbing and accelerating trend seen all throughout Canadian (and other) societies over the last decade. Lich and her handlers are relentlessly cranking the handle to amp-up what looks to be a new and ugly personality disorder that is gaining strength. So many people now, routinely bullying others; quick on the draw with the middle finger, the F-bombs, the blaring car/truck horn - and the $64,000.00 question these people always yell into the faces of those who dare to object - “WADDAYA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?” They have been enabled and given permission by the MAGA crowd down South and the Maple MAGA followers up here. It is getting ugly out there. Anger begets anger and amplifies it. How do we reverse this nasty trend before it follows its traditional trajectory and spins totally out of control? What indeed, are we gonna do about it?

Froehlich Media's avatar

A great question and I don’t have an answer but I lean towards, you transgress you pay a price but currently society is burdened with the theory you transgress with the overwhelming belief of of, let’s try therapy

Roy Collver's avatar

Aaaand…unfortunately, making transgressors pay the price too often comes back to money, money, money. Money is the primary cause and driving force of the enshittification of our orderly society.

Governments today have decreasing appetites towards spending their sparse resources in the efforts, and incurred costs required to have sufficient police presence to patrol and stop (or respond to a complaint), then arrest a bad person, then follow up by building a case to prosecute said person, then subsequent to the win, carry through with a court case; and in winning, then sentencing, THEN carrying through with the sentence - the list is longer. Whic is why so many bad people gleefully say “waddaya gonna do about it, as*hole?

We gotta DO something about it. No other option, no excuses. Here are the rules - here are the consequences. Obey the rules or pay the price. Simple, ain’t it?

Sounds suspiciously like our own Dumb Danielle, a Tik-Tok influencer whose sole ambition is attention-seeking by any means possible. A mile wide and an inch deep with no redeeming social value but a big mouth - sort of like an eight-year-old jumping up and down in the middle of the front yard screaming her head off and waving her arms "look at me! look at meeeeee!" Let grandma rot and stop paying attention to her. A friend of mine said it very succinctly: If you dislike being Canadian so much, MOVE! I'll carry your bags and punt your backside across the border. I don't want to live in a place that looks like our southern neighbour, it's why I came home years ago.

Clearly a couple of loopholes in the justice system which need to be closed. I still wonder why the government didn't shut that down sooner. We have a right to 'peaceful' protest, not just protest. There was nothing peaceful about that. If Rebel News does not meet the threshold for legitimate news in Canada, then it seems pretty straight forward that she's not working for a news outlet.

I apologize for this stupid stupidity of the liberal government

We need more people like you

And less liberal government and lesser emergency act

Mike Canary's avatar

Ummm - you are leaving out important facts from this story. The Supreme Court has ruled that Trudeau, Freeland, Carney and the rest of the Liberals illegally invoked the Emergency Act, violating Canadians charter rights.

Far right?? You can shove this and the rest of your liberal propaganda far right up where the sun doesn’t shine. You should be ashamed of yourself. 🇨🇦 #godkeepourland

Roy Collver's avatar

Whoa dude! Just a minute there bucko! You should learn to read the WHOLE of an essay rather than stop and write stupid comments that are totally wrong.

The author DID detail the “important facts” in depth. You kind of remind me of so many other politically/ideologically stunted people. Read something you don’t like? Jump right in and make an ass of yourself. Your followers, should you have any, are all saying “Way to go Mikey” - congratulations 🤷🏼‍♂️ feel better now?

Froehlich Media's avatar

You have exposed their standard response and their pattern. Thank you

Mike Canary's avatar

“Their” Pattern? Debating facts vs Propaganda? 🤔 Who is “them”? Those that disagree with you?

Mike Canary's avatar

Anyone who subscribes to the propaganda of Fun Tom, and Charlie Angus has no ability to determine what is right or wrong.

Other than saying “you’re wrong”, you insult instead of giving a counter argument. “Politically and Ideologically stunted”? PUHLEAZE!

Roy Collver's avatar

Sorry - you are showing off your inner DUH. You assume anyone with an empathetic view towards others vs the fu*k you view you clearly ascribe to, must have absorbed that view from Charlie Angus or whoever “Fun Tom” is🤷🏼‍♂️. Many, many of us “ordinary” people can research, reason and establish logical hypothesis, all on our own. You should try it sometime - it might help you calm down and realize some important stuff you appear to be missing about Life, the Universe and Everything (look it up) 😎

Mike Canary's avatar

Research the story of Marco Muzzo, and why the Liberal released a convicted drunk driver who killed 3 children and a grandfather. He was released after only 7 years. His family are billionaire real estate developers who donated generously to a political party 😉

If only Tamara Lich had a billionaire family……

In my opinion this so-called "grandmother" is nothing more than a conspiratorial extremist right-wing shill who claims to be a Canadian but continues to work against Canada each & every day. I wish she and Hoekstra would just ride off into the sunset together straight to Mar-A-Lago. I'm sure Trump would put in a word for her at OANN, FOX or perhaps NEWSMAX you know, to better her career as a so-called "journalist". I'm am so tired of these fools, there are no words!

FREDERICK THAUBERGER's avatar

Thank God our courts saw this for what it wasn’t. It was never an assault on democracy or an act of treason. Just a protest that warranted a few parking tickets and a couple of mischief fines. Liberals are by far the biggest crybabies when they don’t get their way.
